Started out as a mechanic at a Maxwell dealership, before finding more success as a driver. However, initially, his sucess proved his undoing as he was sacked for beating his manager in a race! He moved on as a mechanic and racer, joining Stutz in 1912. Retired in 1928, and went on to form the Cooper Engineering Company, which built numerous front-wheel drive Indy cars. He also worked as a team manager, an AAA official and he also worked as a consultant to the United Oil Company. Cooper was one of the sport's best drivers in the 1910's, winning 21 officially sanctioned AAA races between 1912 and 1926, but never did win at Indianapolis.
