Was head of McLaren's automotive division's engine department, but then started his own engine consultancy business in Hertfordshire. In 2016, however, he moved to Sweden to become Borg Warner's Vice-President of Engineering. In 2018, he moved back to Formula 1 as Honda's chief engineer for engine development, which meant a return to England. He was still involved with Honda's powertrain work until 2023. Axel previously worked for Horiba Europe and as a chief racing engineer for the McLaren team after his spell at Mercedes. Before his spell at Mercedes, Wendorff worked at Toyota, and also as an engine designer at Ilmor. He now runs his own business, Wendorff.works Ltd, which offers engineering services for internal combustion engines and electrical drives.
