Son of a steam machine manufacturer, Richard trained as a mechanic, and after World War 1, formed and ran a farm equipment business as well as working on his own constructed motorcycle engines.These proved popular and he began to add a supply business to his workload. In 1924, he moved to Heilbronn and Lahr, and later worked for Zundapp and Victoria, establishing himself as a talented engine designer, whilst still dabbling with motorcycle engines for most of his working life. He also designed his own racing car engine, but it was never his main objective to concentrate full time on the sport. He often was called upon as a consultant until his death in 1974.
