Most of his time is taken up by racing driver instructing and coaching, but Rui still races, mostly in endurance Worldwide (including the Asian Le Mans Series) and GT racing in Italy, where he now lives. He also races in the Blancpain Series and the Michelin Le Mans Cup as well as the European Le Mans Series. He first impressed in the Portuguese Formula Ford series before switching to the British series and he stayed in the UK until 1995, when he switched to German Formula 3. After Formula 3000, he had a brief spell in Formula Open Nissan, coming third in the series in 2000, and then the Renault Clio Eurocup before starting his career in GT racing in 2003.
