Killed in the 1933 Indianapolis 500. Won many events in the late 1920's and 1930's, despite suffering a huge crash on a dirt track at Jungle Park, Indiana, in 1929, which left him with a limp as one leg was shorter than the other. Billman - who was also known as Bud - worked for Ford as a mechanic before starting his career as a youngster in 1924. Billman's niece, Bonnie Britton, later became a journalist and writer who would as part of her assignments cover the Indianapolis 500.
