Mexican Formula 2 Champion in 1994, Fernando raced in many different series. Was driving in the Mexican stock car series, in which he also ran a team. Now retired as a driver, and for a while ran a team in the LATAM Challenge Series. Also runs a driving school, as well as being a driver coach to young Mexican drivers, as well as Emerson Fittipaldi's grandson, Pietro. Fernando spent a long time in Britain as a racer, competing in British Formula 3, winning the national class championship in 1989 in some style. He also took third place in the Jewson Scotland Superprix that year. Fernando also raced in British Formula 3000 and Formula 3 but didn't have as much success. Plata also competed in the Indy Lights Panamericana series and the Mexican Formula Mustang Championship before becoming a stock car regular for a while.
