Retired after a serious accident, but later became a team owner/manager, initially becoming a key part of Kelly Petillo's pit crew. After World War 2, he managed the Ford stock-car program and later became a director for Michigan International Speedway. He also wrote a number of newspaper columns, worked as a public speaker and acted as an ambassador to the sport. Got into the sport as a riding mechanic for his uncle Ralph dePalma, but before he got that role, he worked as a rental car drvier and tyre mechanic. He also ran an automobile dealership. Pete was no mean driver too, and won the 1925 Indianapolis 500.
