Killed when he swerved to avoid a child who ran onto the speedway, during a qualifying run. Brothers Dean (who died in a midget race in 1946), Paul and Ray also raced. Gardner also introduced the two-way radio to the sport. Gardner, who served in the First World War followed Ray, who built and drove race cars, into the sport in 1924. He then gained a reputation as an extremely consistent driver who brought the car home and raced on both the West and East coasts of America.
