Son of Jim, McElreath Jr. was killed in a sprint car crash. Regarded as a top prospect, James already had three titles to his name in both sprint and super-modified cars but died before his career really hit the top trajectory. Those three titles were won in two years at Devil's Bowl Speedway; the sprint crown was taken in 1974 and 1975 and the super-modified trophy in 1974. He then moved to the USAC series, and won the 1976 USAC Midget Division Rookie of the Year award.
