Convicted of importing and distributing drugs, he fled the US, but was captured 8 months later in Puerto Rico. Until 2014, he was serving a life sentence, without parole, in a high-security penitentiary in Coleman, near Orlando, in Florida. As well as working on the petition to free him, he spent his time in prison by exercising, teaching yoga, painting and playing chess and answering any correspondence from race fans and supporters. In 2014, partly due to a petition, and partly due to changes in the law, Randy was released, and at last, free, and took a job up working for a classic car museum in Florida as well as for a big flea market, Swap Shop. As time has gone on, he is doing more and more, including talking about his experiences. Born in Virginia, the family moved to Florida when Randy was a teenager. In 2015, Randy even returned to racing, competing at Mid-Ohio's round of the American Endurance Series. In 2016, he signed up to be a test driver and tuner for a Porsche saloon car team and in 2017, raced in a number of different events and disciplines. However in summer 2017, Lanier suffered a heart-attack and had a quadruple heart-bypass. He is recovering, but it may've stopped racing; Randy does, however, still do race driver instructing in Miami. Randy still enjoys painting and does this in his spare time.
