Brother of Don and Dale. All three brothers were heavily involved in the IMSA drug-smuggling scandal in the 1980's, which also involved Randy Lanier and John Paul Jr. All bar Dale went to prison, with Don serving a year's sentence and Bill, the main person involved of the siblings, for five years. Bill never raced after prison and for a while ran the family jet business and a number of holiday resorts with Don. In 2018, he was jailed for eighteen months for tax fraud and had to pay back the IRS $1.8million of the $10 million he didn't report. Once out of prison, he was then in the news again when he was surprisingly awarded $20 million in purchase orders to provide PPE and masks to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic, but Whittington failed to provide any PPE. All three Whittington's are sons of Dick Whittington, '50's race car owner. Bill who won the 1979 Le Mans and numerous IMSA races, grew up in New Mexico and Hawaii but was largely based in Florida. Before racing, Bill initially managed a holiday resort and ran a motorhome dealership before he then became both an aircraft and drag racer, before starting to race cars in 1978. Bill died in a private plane crash in April 2021 when the small plane he was piloting, taking a terminally-ill pilot friend for one last plane journey, crashed near Winslow, Arizona.
