Later ran a garage and auto body shop in Denver. Frantz took up racing at the age of just eight years old and then he started building his own junior racing cars four years later. Tom then raced in supermodified cars and in 1971 won two State championships, winning in a car he built. He also built a car for his friend and competitor, Jim Opperman, father of Jan. Tom then spent a spell racing in midget, sprint and stockcars, as well as having a reasonable USAC spell for some years. He then became a racing organiser as well as a team manager. Frantz also survived a heart transplant operation but sadly died in 2019.
