Spencer has followed the recently well-trodden path for aspiring US racers - he started in karting, moved up into the Skip Barber series, then US Formula 2000, where he competed on a Mazda Road to Indy Programme, which eventually proved successful by his graduation to the event in 2016. He also moved up to Indy Lights in 2015 and won the title to earn his chance in the Indycar Series. In 2017, he competed on a part-time basis in the series before getting a full-time drive in 2018, which he retained in 2019. In 2020, he is still in the series, but only part-time and is now racing sportscars more often.
