Highly promising driver promoted by Sauber to a race seat in 2013, and was retained again in 2014. He didn't however, put the results together and shown much consistency and so he lost his drive at the end of 2014. Esteban then became Ferrari's F1 test and reserve driver and did well in his performances in testing, earning him a return to Formula 1 with the new Haas team in 2016. However at season's end, another disappointing year saw him lose his seat and he then went racing in Formula E and Indycar. Won the 2008 Formula BMW series and the GP3 series in 2010 and Esteban didn't do badly in GP2 either. In 2018, he became a F1 simulation and test driver for Mercedes which he continued until 2021. He worked with Mercedes away from the track as a brand and business ambassador but finally returned to full-time racing and the World Endurance Championship in 2022. He continues in sportscars, including the IMSA Championship in 2023.
