Began racing sportscars in 1952, and although he was quite adept, Carl decided team management was more for him, as well as needing to focus on his car importing and distributing business. He was longtime US importer for Lola, and this led to his return to racing, running teams in F5000, Can-Am, Super Vee, and then in 1985, Formula 1. Also in the 1980's, he founded, with Paul Newman, the hugely successful Newman-Haas CART/IRL team, and remained involved with them until they disbanded in 2011. Until late 2012, he was actively on the board of directors at Road America and even became involved with Lola again by backing their sportscar effort. Sadly, towards the end of his life, he developed dementia and died in 2016. Despite living in Illinois for most of his life, Carl was born in Germany and moved to the US with his family in March 1938.
