In 2016, Lawson became, at that time, the youngest ever Formula Ford champion when he won New Zealand's FF1600 title. He then moved to Australia and Formula 4, finishing in the runner-up poisition, a position he repeated in ADAC Formula Ford in 2018. He also took wins in the Toyota Racing series, Euroformula Open, Asian and European F3. Through his Red Bull links, Lawson went to the DTM in 2021 as well as Formula 2. He won the opening round to become the youngest ever race winner in the series. He was very close to winning the title but was punted out unceremoniously by title challenger Kelvin van der Linde at the last round. Meanwhile he had made his debut in Formula 2 (winning again on his debut), and took 5 wins. In 2023, he again took a debut win in Super Formula, all of which came via his Red Bull links, having tested or practiced many times since 2019 in Formula 1 machinery. At the Dutch Grand Prix of 2023, he made his Formula 1 debut after an injury to Daniel Ricciardo for the Alpha Tauri team. He impressed during his spell covering for Ricciardo, scoring his first points at Singapore, but he returned to Red Bull as reserve driver in 2024 until he again replaced Ricciardo (this time through Ricciardo's lack of performance) mid-way through the 2024 season. In 2025, he moved to the main Red Bull team.
