Came into the sport on the back of precious few races, but impressed continually, and became World Champion in 2007. He left Formula 1 to go and compete in World Championship rallying, after numerous attempts at rallies in Finland. In 2011, he also appeared in NASCAR, but in 2012, he returned to F1 with the Lotus team and stayed with them in 2013, but returned to Ferrari in 2014. He remained with the Italian team until the end of 2018. In 2019, he joined Sauber, the team he drove for at the start of his career eighteen years earlier. He remained there in 2021, in its guise as Alfa Romeo before announcing his retirement at the age of 42 at the end of the year. He has since appeared in anything that takes his fancy, including NASCAR.
