Son of the late Jerry and cousin of Robby and Al Jr. Now retired from racing, but was in the sport as race director of the Champ Car Atlantic series. Also does stunt and promotional driving for film and TV and tyre testing for the Cooper Tyre and Rubber Company. Also heavily involved in the popcorn industry and is vice-president of Precision Dynamics, a vehicle evaluations firm. In 2012, he became IRL race steward and driver coach/mentor. Johnny took up racing relatively late compared to other family members, partly due to his father's death when Johnny was still a baby, following his mother's wishes and becoming a teacher. However he also helped Al Unser Sr. as a mechanic and took up racing from thereon.
