Died from pneumonia. Also involved in the car business for a while. Lytle was best remembered for his association with the Haynes-Apperson motor company and in 1908, was hired to race their Jackrabbit racing car and enjoyed a win at Savannah. However he was lucky to survive a crash in September 1909 that killed his longtime friend and riding mechanic James F. Bates. He stayed with Apperson to compete in the first Indianapolis 500. Lytle, who started racing in 1904, retired after that race and became manager of Apperson's agency in Kokomo, Indiana. His son, also called Herbert, also raced for a short while in youth races.
