H. J. stood for Hugh Judson - which is why Kilpatrick was sometimes referred to as Juddy. Also entered a number of events both in pre-World War 1 days and pre-Indianapolis; he was racing in dirt road events in the 1900's. During this time he set the straight-away starting to speed record at Long Island at 37 seconds for a mile and he survived a massive crash at the 1908 Atlanta Speedway. Juddy was named after the famous Union major general who served with distinction during the American Civil War. Kilpatrick, who married twice, was based in Arkansas for a while before settling in California. Kilpatrick later worked as a radio technician and also ran his own general goods store.
