Stepson of Tony George, Ed is still in the Indycar Series, despite his step-father's removal from running the series a good while back. However, Ed is now running his own team, after a few years of part-time drives. Because of family links, Carpenter got involved in racing at an early age, racing quarter-midgets aged just eight, working his schooling around racing. Ed then moved into midgets when starting full-time racing, winning in the Silver Crown series in 2001, before a spell in Indy Lights before his graduation to the IRL in 2003. Carpenter also hold a marketing degree from Butler University in Indianapolis.
