Lived in Indianapolis, where he was team manager of Hemelgarn Racing for over 20 years and enjoyed an Indianapolis 500 win in that role. In 2010, he suffered a heart-attack and was in quite poor health after complications set in. Happily, he made a recovery and returned to visiting events before his final illness. Kunzman started in racing as a drag racer before moving to stock cars, and then to sprint cars, a discipline in which he had a lot of success. Kunzman bore the scars of a massive crash in 1970 at Odessa, which burnt his face and neck. Finally retired in 1982 where he soon started a new phase of his career.
