Had a super-sub role for many years in many disciplines and it was one of these performances that led to a seat in the IRL with Andretti Green Racing for three years. He then switched to sportscars with the team, but was dropped in 2008 and became a driver coach and consultant for Vision Racing. In 2009, he formed his own team, in Indy Lights, and then ran a Indycar Series team. In 2011, despite the team's small size, his team won the Indianapolis 500 with Dan Wheldon. In 2016, his team merged with Andretti Autosport. Herta remains in charge of the fourth car they decided to run as a result, plus also works as the driver coach for the team as a whole and runs a team in endurance racing. Son Colton is also racing.
