Southeast Asian Formula Pacific
The series of races in Malaysia and Macau moved to Formula Pacific rules in 1978, matching the rules in New Zealand where the International series in January had attracted strong international fields in 1977 and 1978. Japan also introduced a Formula Pacific series in 1978 and when Australia also moved to Formula Pacific in 1981 there was a short-lived period of unity across all these countries.
However, in 1983 the FIA introduced Formula Mondial, originally announced as a 2000cc formula intended to replace both Formula Atlantic and Formula Pacific worldwide. It ended up keeping the 1600cc engine rules, but the whole affair was so massively bungled that the uncertainty was a factor in neither the Southeast Asian or Japanese Formula Pacific series continuing into 1983.
