After the success of the Lola T360 in Formula Atlantic, Lola's new 1976 model, the T460 sold in large numbers. However, the car was not popular with customers, and only won one race in North America.

The Lola T360 had been very successful in Formula Atlantic in 1974 and 1975, and for 1976 Lola embarked on a development programme to produce a car that retained all the T360's positive qualities, such as straight line speed, but to improve cornering ability. This T460 was successfully developed over the 1975/76 winter, and incorporated narrower track, an improved braking system with Lockheed calipers and ventilated discs front and rear, and completely revised suspension geometry.

In Britain, Ted Wentz won the 1976 Indylantic Championship in a works-supported T460, but in the US the Lolas were overwhelmed by Gilles Villeneuve and his March 76B, who won eight of the 12 races. The best T460 driver was Tom Klausler, who won at Mid-Ohio in August in Villeneuve's absence, and took two second places. Tom Gloy and Bertil Roos impressed on occasions, but overall it was a poor year for Lola and that would impact on sales in 1977.

HU1

New to Carl Haas Racing for Héctor Rebaque to race in Canadian and IMSA Formula Atlantic races. Norman Allen (Hanover Park, IL) then raced a Lola in Central Division Formula B in 1977 and 1978, identified as a T460 at one Regional in 1978, and he advertised an "ex-Rebaque" Lola T460 in November 1978. Eleven years later, in September 1989, Michael Duncan (Los Altos, CA) advertised T460 "chassis #1" which he described as an "Ex-Carl Haas/works car driven by Tom Klausler/Hector Rebaque". Subsequent history unknown.

Driven by: Héctor Rebaque and Norm Allen. First race: Laguna Seca (R2), 2 May 1976. Total of 13 recorded races.

New to Steve Jizmagian (San Francisco, CA) and raced in SCCA Nationals and IMSA Formula Atlantic races in 1976. Retained for 1977 for Californian SCCA Nationals and Regionals. Retained again for 1978, again for Californian SCCA Nationals and Regionals. Retained by Jizmagian for 1979, but destroyed in an accident at Westwood in June 1979. What was left was broken for spares.

Driven by: Steve Jizmagian. First race: Holtville Aerodrome, 21 Mar 1976. Total of 29 recorded races.

New to Pierre Phillips of Pierre's Motor Racing, and entered for Tom Gloy to race in IMSA and Canadian Formula Atlantic in 1976. Gloy then moved to Allan McCall's Tui team, and the Lola was next seen raced by Phil Currey (Concord, CA) in 1976 and 1977. Unknown after November 1977, but probably the "ex-Gloy" T460 advertised by Rob Mullaney (San Francisco, CA) in 1981 and 1982. Also likely to be the "ex Gloy" T460 advertised from Britton, OK, a suburb of Oklahoma City, in December 1987.

Driven by: Tom Gloy and Phil Currey. First race: Laguna Seca (R2), 2 May 1976. Total of 8 recorded races.

New to Jerry Hansen (Long Lake, MN) for SCCA Central Division Formula B during 1976, and first appeared at the Road America June Sprints. Finished second at the 1976 Runoffs to Bobby Brown's March 76B. Sold to Frank Mahaney III (Wayzata, MN) for 1977, but Hansen confusingly acquired a different T460, the ex-Tom Klausler car, to run himself that year, as his 1977 Lola T560 was late to arrive. HU5 was sold to Steve Overton (Belleville, IL), a member of St Louis Region, for 1978 and is probably the car raced by Ernst Schneider (St Louis, MO) in 1979 and 1980. Then unknown until bought from Californian Paul Schafer by Cy Moreland (Trainer, PA) in 1997. Sold to Colin Haste (Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia) in 2003 as a "basket case" with a new tub fabricated by Marc Bahner. Restored to Jerry Hansen's livery. Sold by Colin to Peter Brennan in early 2019. Still with Peter in March 2021.

Driven by: Jerry Hansen, Frank Mahaney III and Steve Overton. First race: Road America, 6 Jun 1976. Total of 17 recorded races.

New to Tom Klausler (Palatine, IL) and raced in IMSA and Canadian Formula Atlantic in 1976, entered by Traylor Engineering. Then to Jerry Hansen (Long Lake, MN) in 1977, who borrowed it when his new Lola T560 was later being delivered. Chris Townsend's research shows that this car was briefly owned by Ed Midgley (Geneva, IL) in 1978, then sold to Niki Karabetsos (Chicago, IL) for 1979, and then to Sebastian Puleo (Chicago, IL) for SCCA drivers school and Regionals from 1982 to 1984. In 2005, it was acquired in Detroit by Derek Harling (Windsor Ontario), and retained by him as a source of spares for his T460 HU11. Harling sold both his T460s around 2017 to Joe Bunton (Fort Collins, CO).

Driven by: Tom Klausler, Jerry Hansen, Ed Midgley and Niki Karabetsos. First race: Road Atlanta (R1), 11 Apr 1976. Total of 14 recorded races.

New to Wilbur Bunce Racing, and raced by Richard Melville and Dennis Firestone in IMSA and Canadian Formula Atlantic in the first half of 1976. Reappeared in early 1977 for Dennis Firestone in an SCCA National, then to Sam Nicolosi (San Diego) for the rest of the year. Retained by Nicolosi for 1978 for SCCA Nationals and Regionals. Advertised by Nicolosi in September 1978. Subsequent history unknown, but Nicolosi recalls that he sold it to "a racer in SCCA North Western region". This car, together with Lola T360 HU12, was acquired in the early 1990s by JC Gongaware (Youngwood, PA). After his death in April 2018, both cars passed to his son Jason Gongaware (St Peters, MO).

Driven by: Dennis Firestone, Richard Melville and Sam Nicolosi. First race: Holtville Aerodrome, 21 Mar 1976. Total of 24 recorded races.

HU9

New to Pierre Phillips of Pierre's Motor Racing, and raced by a succession of hire drivers in IMSA and Canadian Formula Atlantic in early 1976. Last seen in the Pro at Mont-Tremblant in July 1976, but in early August Jim Mullins appeared in a T460 at a Sears Point National entered at #36, the same number Michael Landrum had used in HU9's last Pro appearance four weeks earlier. In May 1977, Monte Shelton (Portland, OR) won an ICSCC race at Portland in a Lola T460 entered as #136, and the entry number and location suggest very strongly that this was Pierre Phillips' car, retained as a rental car in SCCA Nationals. Unknown after May 1977.

Driven by: Harald Kirberg, Chip Mead, Bobby Brown, Tom Weichmann, Ted Wentz, Michael Landrum, Jim Mullins and Monte Shelton. First race: Laguna Seca (R2), 2 May 1976. Total of 7 recorded races.

New to Brian Robertson's Quick-Trans/Gabriel International Warranty team for Bertil Roos and Craig Hill for 1976, but it is not known who drove which car. Chassis HU12 was sold to Bob Lybarger (McHenry, IL) for 1977, and updated with a T560 kit supplied by Carl Haas. Lybarger raced the car in SCCA Nationals and Midwest Council events from 1977 to 1982 but actual data on his race history is sparse. He scored two points in CenDiv Formula B in 1977, representing Iowa Region, and finished fourth in class at Road America in September. He scored two points again in 1979, by now a member of Blackhawk Valley Region, then 16 points in 1980 and 50 points in 1981, when he finished third in the division. Lybarger is believed to have sold the car to Ed Midgley, but exactly when this happened is unclear. Midgley had it by 1999, when it had been restored, and it was next seen when owned by Mark Barr. Then sold to Mike Finch (Austin, Texas), and sold by him to Simon Gardiner (Adelaide, Australia) in 2006 or 2007, who first raced the car at Mallala in March 2008. Raced regularly in Australian historic events from 2008 to 2016. After a three-year gap, Gardiner raced it again at The Bend International Track in September 2019.

Driven by: Robert A Lybarger. First race: Blackhawk Farms, 19 Jun 1977. Total of 5 recorded races.

New to Sandy Shepard (Denton, TX) and raced in SCCA Nationals in 1976, winning the Labor Day Classic SCCA National at Texas World Speedway in September, and qualifying for the Runoffs. Retained for 1977, and later advertised in September 1978. Sold for 1978 to Ron McNear (St. Louis, MO), who told Chris Townsend that he had bought it from Shepard and confirmed its chassis number. Raced by McNear in SCCA Nationals in 1978, and advertised by him in 1981. Subsequent history unknown.

New to American Ted Wentz and raced in the 1976 Indylantic series, entered by Swan Lager Racing. The car remained in Lola's ownership, and was sold at the end of the season via Albert Poon to Indonesian racer Beng Soeswanto, who raced it in the New Zealand Formula Pacific Internationals in January 1977, then in Southeast Asian races later that year. He crashed the car at Penang in May 1977, but was back out for the Macau GP in November. Believed to have been retained for 1978.

New to Tim Coconis (Palo Alto, CA) for Canadian and IMSA Formula Atlantic races in 1976. Retained for SCCA Nationals in 1977, 1978 and 1979. Sold to John Keller, who continued to run the car in SCCA events up to the mid-1980s. Bought by Don Harris in 1990, who confirmed the provenance to Chris Townsend. Sold by Harris to Terry Fullerton (UK) in May 2007. Painted during this time in Tim Coconis's 1978 Carmel Plaza livery. In late 2010/early 2011 it went to Jim Blockley, who sold it a year later to Fred Phillips in South Africa. Phillips raced it at East London in 2012. Bought from Phillips by Andre Bezuidenhout in early 2019. The car was fitted with a 2-litre BDG-type engine and featured in Car magazine in January 2021.

New to Carl Liebich (Plymouth, WI/Two Rivers, WI) for Canadian and IMSA Formula Atlantic races late in the 1976 season. Liebich was said to have a new T560 for 1977, but it appears it was his nearly-new T460 updated. Retained for 1978, 1979, and the start of 1980. Chris Townsend's research shows this car was sold to Chuck Dietrich in 1980 and used by him in SCCA Central Division Formula Atlantic until 1982. It was then retained unraced by Dietrich until sold to Lowell Blossom (Zionsville, IN) in 1995. Raced by Blossom at Lime Rock in May 1996 and at Grattan Raceway in August 1997. It was sold by Blossom to Dave Jordano (Indianapolis, IN) in 2005. Subsequent history unknown, but believed to be the T460/T560 raced by Tom Thornton in HSCC Derek Bell Trophy races in 2010 and 2011.

Driven by: Carl Liebich and Chuck Dietrich. First race: Mosport Park (R6), 22 Aug 1976. Total of 11 recorded races.

A Lola T462 built for Alo Lawler and fitted with a 2-litre Swindon BDX engine for the Shellsport Group 8 championship, sponsored by L & B Excavations. His first appearance was at the Silverstone International Trophy F2 race but he was pushed from the grid with an electric failure. He then had a huge accident in the car at Oulton Park in April. Raced in 12 rounds of the Shellsport series, and in Formula Libre races at Aintree and Mallory Park. To John Eastwood for Irish Formula Atlantic in 1978, racing at Mondello Park, Kirkistown and Donington Park. The sold to Joe Greenan (Belfast, Northern Ireland) in August, and raced by him at Mondello Park in September and in 1979. The car remained in Ireland and ended up with Paddy Murphy, who raced it in a libre event at Kirkistown in 1984. Murphy said on 10 Tenths in January 2004 that he bought the car from Greenan, raced it for one season then sold it to historic racer Alex Seldon (Ripley, Surrey), "who wanted it just for the engine". Later owner Ed Polland (Netherlands) told Lola Heritage that "the car was completely restored in early 1990/1991 and than sold to a Dutchman Peter van der Velden from whom I purchased the car in 2003". Still owned by Ed Poland in 2011.

Driven by: Alo Lawler, John Eastwood, Joe Greenan and Pat Murphy. First race: Mallory Park (UK R1), 13 Mar 1977. Total of 25 recorded races.

Lola T460s in 1976

First owners are known for all of the 21 Lola T460s built, but in some cases teams owned more than one car, and the actual drivers of a few cars are unclear. Brian Robertson bought HU12 and HU16 for his Quick-Trans/Gabriel International Warranty team, to be raced by Bertil Roos and Craig Hill. Also Wilbur Bunce Racing bought HU7 and HU19. He ran HU7 for Richard Melville and Dennis Firestone, and then a second T460, presumably HU19, later in the season for Tim Cooper and then for Tom Klausler.

'the Bertil Roos car'

Entered by Brian Robertson's Quick-Trans Racing for Bertil Roos (Blakeslee, PA) in the opening rounds of the Canadian Formula Atlantic series in 1976, sponsored by Gabriel International Warranty. After three races, Robertson replaced it with a new Ralt RT1. As teammate Craig Hill continued to race his Lola, this ex-Roos car must be the car raced by Richard Spenard (Montréal, Quebec) as the #22 Planter's Peanuts entry when he joined the team at Mont-Tremblant in July. He then moved to a Ralt for the next race, so the history of the Roos Lola T460 is not known after July 1976.

Driven by: Bertil Roos and Richard Spenard. First race: Edmonton (R1), 16 May 1976. Total of 4 recorded races.

Lola T460s in 1977

In North America, HU1 is unknown in 1977; HU2 remained with the Briggs family; HU3 was retained by Steve Jizmagian; Phil Currey retained his ex-Tom Gloy HU4; Jerry Hansen's HU5 went to Frank Mahaney; Jerry Hansen bought an ex-Klausler car, probably HU6; Sam Nicolosi acquired HU7; Grant Swartz retained HU8; Pierre Phillips' HU9 appears to have been retained as a hire car; David Ralston's unused HU10 is unknown; Dave Webber retained HU11; Brian Robertson's HU12 went to Bob Lybarger; Sandy Shepard retained HU14; Brian Robertson's HU16 is unknown; Tim Coconis retained HU17; Carl Liebich is believed to have retained and updated his HU18; and the second Wilbur Bunce Racing HU19 raced once by Tom Klausler is unknown. Elsewhere in the world, Beng Soeswanto had the ex-Ted Wentz HU15; Tony Trimmer's HU20 is unknown in 1977 but pops up again in Ireland in 1978; and HU21 was briefly used by Lola as a test mule and then consigned to Carl Haas for Formula Atlantic.

So five T460s cannot be tracked into 1977: Carl Haas's ex-Rebaque HU1 in Illinois, David Ralston's unused HU10 also in Illinois, Brian Robertson's HU16 in Canada, Wilbur Bunce's HU19 in California, and the ex-mule HU21 with Carl Haas.

Such were the qualities of the T460, demand for second-hand ones was slim. Jeffrey Wood raced a T460 in a Riverside Regional in early November which could be a Pierre Phillips or Wilbur Bunce hire car or possibly one of Brian Robertson's cars. In April 1977, Rod Ocampo had a T460 at the Malaysian Grand Prix. In November 1977, Ocampo and Richard Rapp both raced T460s in the Macau Grand Prix, as did Swartz in HU8 and Soeswanto in HU15.

Chris Townsend's detailed research adds two more names: Peter J. Thompson (Wayne, PA) advertised a T460 in early 1978 that was "new mid 76, updated to 77 spec"; and Richard Rapp (Hawthorne, CA) advertised his car in April 1979 when it had still only done six races. Of the five "missing" cars, all but Hass's HU1 could at that point only have six races on them.

Also, Chuck Grauel (Kansas City, KS) had an unidentified Lola that season, and Jim Wood (Suisun, CA) raced a suspiciously successful unidentified Lola in northern Californian Formula C.

Later on in the season, he drove a FF1600 Lola T440 in MidWest Division SCCA Nationals at Hutchinson and Mid-America Raceway. In 1978, he started the season in a Formula Ford Crosslé 32F and easily won the MWDiv championship. He even had time to move to a Lola T497 in the C Sports Racing class and won that MWDiv title as well. The fate of the Lola T460 is unknown.

In addition to the above, unknown Lola T460s were driven by Jeff Wood, John Payne, Richard Rapp and Norbert Petitpas.

Chris Townsend has researched these cars in detail, and advises the following later owners of Lola T460s:

Chris Speilberg (Eugene, OR): raced a red T460 in SCCA Regionals in the northwest in 1979.

Tom Watkins (Manchester, MO): advertised a T460 with a new tub in Autoweek 11 January 1982.

Jon S. McKibben (Irvine, CA): advertised a T460 with Jennings engine in On Track 7 October 1982.

Dean Gamburd (Los Angeles, CA): ran a T460 on southern California SCCA events in 1985. He advertised in in On Track 25 November 1985, and when tracked down by Chris recalled that the car came to him from Sandy Dells.
