Scottish Hill Climb Championship 1979
The 1979 series had three main runners, reigning champion Jim Campbell who had finally traded in the Brabham BT35 for the 1975 ex-Ken MacMaster Modus M4H with potent 2.2-litre Hart engine. Jimmy Jack still had the F2 March 772 and Norrie Galbraith had moved up to the single-seater class with the ex-David Franklin/Alan Richards March 742/772, which he fitted with a 2-litre Richardson FVA-based engine. Campbell narrowly took the title with Jack needing a tie-breaker to take second place from Galbraith.
In the other classes, Barrowgill Angus now had a 2-litre Cosworth BDG engine in his Davrian Stiletto, and George Coghill and Ricky Gauld again fielded their circuit-racing 1-litre Hillman Imp Special Saloons. Another Super Saloon making appearances in the Top 10 was the remarkable Maguire Mini of Donald and Duncan Laing, a space frame chassis built by John Maguire with a fibreglass body and 1293cc BMC engine. Over the coming years it would be turbocharged and then supercharged.
