Formula South Africa 1984

The flow of one-year-old ex-F2 cars into South Africa continued as both Klaus Grogor and John Moni imported March 832s from Europe. Ian Scheckter continued with his March 832 and Graham Duxbury's 832 went to Ivano Moavero. DAW Supplies acquired a second Maurer MM83 for Trevor van Rooyen to drive. Van Rooyen and Tilanus were both very close to catching Scheckter at the first few races.

The rather underhand way in which DAW Supplies had dropped Bernard Tilanus and Braam Smith in mid-1983 deepened the rivalry between DAW and Mel Lahner's Rackrite Racing team. Lahner offered a deal with Tilanus and Smith to supply two new Lant monocoques to be built up for the pair by Fred Goddard's Petromark team. The deal quickly went sour when Lahner found that Tilanus had unrivetted the two tubs, intending to improve the bonding glue and rivetting. Lahner reclaimed all the equipment, and Tilanus and Smith hired the two Pretoria Brick Ralt RT4s instead. Bernard Tilanus drove the ex-Wayne Taylor Ralt RT4/82 and Braam Smith the ex-George Fouche Ralt RT4/83.

Lahner hired ex-F1 driver Dave Morgan to manage his Rack-Rite team, which initially entered two Lant RR84s for Roy Klomfass and André du Plessis, plus the old Ralt RT4/81 for Mel's son Wayne. After Klomfass's car was damaged by fire at the opening race, the team returned with Matt Keyser in the Klomfass Lant and Wayne Taylor in a newly-built Lant.

Some circuits had complained about the noise of the Mazda, and there were attempts to find a compromise on silencers. Mel Lahner developed a "supertrap" silencer, but the Clerk of the Course at Killarney rejected it. Eventually the competitors' body, the Formula Atlantic Association, convinced SA Motorsport's National Council to delay the implementation of the limit until the end of the 1984 season.

Tony Martin also acquired an MM83 but he and Graham Duxbury were both involved in an all-South African team in the US IMSA series, managed by Ken Howes and sponsored by Kreepy Krauly, a South African maker of swimming pool cleaners. This kept both drivers away from the Sigma series for most of the season, but they both drove Martin's Maurer MM83 when they were available.
