Formula South Africa 1982
The revitalisation of South African Formula Atlantic led to the arrival of four brand new racing cars for the 1982 season. Graham Duxbury and his backers, Hekro Engineering, parts maker Propart, and BP, bought a new 1982 March, always called a March 822 in South Africa, but listed by March as a March 82A. Rack Rite Racing also acquired a new car, a late-season Ralt RT4/81 for Trevor van Rooyen. The team's older Ralt RT2/79 was dismantled to provide a template for a new line of Lant cars, built in South Africa.
Later in the season two even newer Ralt RT4/82s arrived, one acquired by Brian Ferris, and the other by Pretoria Brick Racing for Wayne Taylor to drive. Tony Martin preferred to stay with his approach of using nearly-new F2 cars and acquired a Maurer MM81. Bernard Tilanus was not yet convinced by wing cars, so bought two flat-bottomed March 782s from Paul Smith. These could not keep pace with the ground-effect cars, so Jeff Waberski's DAW Supplies acquired another Maurer MM81 later in the season for Tilanus to drive.
Older cars continued to be fill out the grids, ranging from a pair of March 722s that were now ten years old, a 1975 Chevron B29, one of the 1975 Wheatcroft R18s, three 1976 Chevron B34s and a host of March 76Bs and 77Bs. Pretoria Brick started the season with the ex-Scheckter March 792 and a March 802, but neither worked well.
The championship ended with drama at the final race. Van Rooyen led the points table and was lapping steadily, keeping an eye on his only rival, Graham Duxbury, but lost his concentration for a moment and hit the barrier. A surprised Duxbury won the race, and the title.
