Southern Pacific SCCA Formula B 1973

Bill Middleton kept the Brabham BT38 that he had bought mid-season in 1972, and retained his Southern Pacific title, narrowly beating John Angus in his much older BT29. Richard Paul had a brand new March 73B and took second place at Phoenix in February, but then focused on the Pro series, as did Wink Bancroft who updated his March 722 with Falconer bodywork.

Cal Club had a busy Regional championship based at Riverside, and many of the club's Formula B runners were regulars in that series.

Every one of the FB point scorers in 1973 was a Cal Club member. San Diego, Utah and Arizona members were squeezed out in almost every category, with only Don Roberts of Arizona coming close to a title in B Production.

Southern Pacific Division sources

Although Los Angeles was one of the homes of American motor racing, we have few sources of information for southern Californian FB racing in this period. Competition Press & Autoweek had some regional coverage up to 1973 and Formula magazine then took over for a period in the mid-1970s. However, we are keen to acquire or borrow 1960s, 1970s and 1980s copies of SCCA regional publications from this Division. The key ones are:

  • California Sportscar [1960s] (California Sports Car Club)
  • Post Grid [1969-1970] (California Sports Car Club Region)
  • Finish Line [from 1971] (California Sports Car Club Region)
  • Gridlines (San Diego Region)

We are also keen to get scans of entry lists from SCCA Nationals for this division.
