Notes

For a long time, the SCCA listed Larry Skeels as the 1965 national champion but he was actually the Formula C (1100cc) champion that year. Contemporary reports say that there were no starters in FA in 1965.
In 1977, only two cars practiced at the US national finals, Dan Johnson's Chevron B24 and Mike Rounds' Lotus 70. Johnson failed to start and Rounds didn't even manage a lap. As the SCCA require two cars to constitute a class, no winner was declared.

SCCA Formula A

The SCCA devised Formula A in 1965 as part of a shake-up of their fast-growing Formule Libre category. It was originally designed to follow the new F1 regulations that were to come into force in 1966 but it struggled to get any competitive entries and single-seater racing was dominated by the 1600cc Formula B production racing cars from Brabham, Lotus and LeGrand.

In 1968, the SCCA opened up Formula A to 5-litre production engines and it rapidly took off. It would be adopted in the UK, Australia and New Zealand as Formula 5000 and the F5000 name would later be used for the US 'Pro' series as well. The SCCA continued to call their amateur category Formula A right up to 1978 when it was merged into ASR ('A' Sports Racing).

Each November, the SCCA invited the top three from each of its seven Divisions to the Runoffs, held at Riverside, Daytona and Road Atlanta during this period. The winner of that race was declared the National Champion.
