Now retired from racing. He is a big sled dog fan and often visits races., whilst keeping some links to the sport. Phil has had some health issues in recent years, but remains active. Caliva was based in California and Vermont when racing, basing himself near longtime friend Bill Alsup. Caliva had a varied racing career which included Super Vee and occasionally hot rods. Phil had plenty of enthusiasm as a racer, but not the budget to match. That said, he kept a semi-regular career in the CART series going for 5 seasons, with his best season in 1980 with consistent finishes all season.
