American born McElrea started his career in Australian Formula Ford in 2015, with his father's team. Hunter went on to win the 2018 Australian Formula Ford title, before moving to the land of his birth to race in US Formula F2000 (where he was runner-up in 2019), Indy Pro 2000 (3rd in 2020) and then Indy Lights (2023 runner-up). He also raced IMSA sportscars before getting an Indycar chance. His grandfather Rod was New Zealand beach racing champion in 1971 and 1983, whilst his father, Andy, who also runs a Porsche Carrera team, won the 1991 New Zealand Formula Ford Championship, and the 1996 New Zealand Trans-Am Championship.
