Son of a major insurance man, William later turned to that field for many years, after finishing his racing career. Jones was a works driver for the Case Motor Company after spending a few years as a test and development driver and as a branch sales manager for the company. Jones later kept links to the sport via reunions. Jones appears not to have raced too much after his Indianapolis spell, where he lasted 122 laps before his steering broke. Although Jones (whose full name was William Lewis Jones) was American, his father, also called William and his mother, Jane, were both born and bred in Wales and were still listed as being Welsh at the time of Jones' birth.
