Died in 2018, after when suffering a minor stroke, John's reaction to the medicine left him in a coma from which he didn't recover. Son of the late actor, Sir Bernard Miles, John was a chassis development engineer for many years, most notably with Lotus F1, after he retired from racing in 1972. A technical journalist, he was a consultant for Multimatic, a motorsports components and systems supply company. Miles continued to tutor and support young engineers and remained on hand as an independent consultant until his death. He was also involved in a record company, but also kept many links to the sport and was a regular visitor to historic events. A quite brilliant development driver, Miles often had the onerous task of developing some of Lotus' more innovative designs, but left the team after Rindt's death at Monza in 1970. He then worked with BRM as a development driver and as well as Formula 1, won three sportscar championships. He later worked on the development of the Ford Focus car, worked as a test driver for Autocar, became an engine builder, worked on the chassis of Lotus' Formula 1 cars in the early 1990's and also worked for Aston Martin.
