Barney Oldfield's racing mechanic, he moved with Oldfield to California to work at Harry Miller's car company and later settled there. Later kept links with the sport via interviews regarding Oldfield. Hill was also a regarded carburettor expert with Miller and served in the First World War. He was also a driver - albeit briefly - in his own right and won the AAA sanctioned race at San Diego in 1913. He kept going until 1915 when his work with Miller made it necessary to focus on that rather than risking it with racing.
